The US and Japan will expand military cooperation

Heads of military and diplomatic departments of the two countries held talks on the North Korean threat
The threat from North Korea forced the United States and Japan to declare the expansion of military cooperation.
"In connection with the serious situation that has arisen, we will accelerate the implementation of military cooperation plans between the United States and Japan, and also strengthen the US military presence in Japan and on the island of Guam," Defense Secretary James Mattis said on Thursday.
This week, North Korean media reported that the country's leader, Kim Jong-un, "temporarily" refused to implement the plan to launch ballistic missiles in the area of Guam.
Nevertheless, the threat from Pyongyang was the main topic of the talks held in Washington by State Department head Rex Tillerson, James Mattis and their Japanese counterparts.
In a statement released Thursday by the US State Department, it is said that the United States intends to "place the most modern systems (weapons) in Japan", while the official Tokyo, in turn, pledged to "expand its defensive capabilities."
According to Foreign Minister Taro Kono, Japan is soon going to spend $ 500 million to "strengthen the security of shipping in East Asia", as well as to reconsider some aspects of its defensive doctrine, given the new threat from North Korea.
Representatives of the United States and South Korea confirmed that the joint military exercises of the two countries will be held next Monday in the region.
